It was a night to remember for 16-year old Olivia Bin-Cheski.

Olivia suffers from a rare myopathy that affects muscles in her leg, arm, and heart.

But the brave girl hasn’t let that stop her from living her life to the fullest and partying like a rock star. To help her do just that, the “Make a Wish” foundation granted a wish for Olivia, her very own super “Sweet 16” party.

The party took place at the Merion Caterers in Cinnaminson, New Jersey. 165 friends and family members came out to make Olivia’s wish come true.

After her big night, Olivia’s mother Jen sent NBC10 a heartfelt email. It reads:

Over 2,000 families have already registered to attend the next event hosted by El Clasificado and Quinceanera.com. Over 50 booths offering reception hall rentals, cakes, flowers, decorations, catering, and DJ services will be available at the Ontario expo, promising every possible service for organizing a Quince party. Quinceanera.com Expo and Fashion Show will showcase the latest trends in Quince attire

A record-breaking attendance is expected for the next Quinceanera.com Expo and Fashion Show proving that the cultural and festive Quinceañera phenomenon is rising again, hand-in-hand with the slow, but steady recovery from the American economic slow down. Over 2,000 families attended the previous Quinceañera.com Expo and many more families have already registered to attend the next event. The expo and fashion show drew more than 400 young girls in search of the best alternatives for their long-awaited fifteenth birthday celebration.

The Hilton Hotel in Ontario was selected for the upcoming Quince expo to be held on October 3 from 12pm to 5pm. The event is free and open to the public, a common practice for hosting company, El Clasificado, which has connected families in the Hispanic community with hundreds of businesses providing products and services for quinceañera celebrations over the last 22 years.

The Ontario Expo promises over 50 booths offering every possible service for the upcoming festivities including reception halls, cakes, flowers, decorations, food and catering, and even DJs, some of which have been sponsoring the event since the first Quinceanera.com expo in 2006.

The much anticipated Quinceañera dress and accessories fashion show will showcase the latest trends, many from well known brands, in traditional and fashionista Quince celebration attire. Elegant Touch and Roxy’s Bridal, two local merchants, will present their newest dress designs on the runway and give attendees an upfront view of this season’s fashion trends.

As a final treat, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a raffle to win one of three dresses, one of which is valued at $2,500. One quinceañera dress to be raffled has been created by Mexican fashion designer Mitzy, known worldwide for designing Thalia’s wedding dress. Elegant Touch will also be raffling one of their designs for a lucky winner that attends the expo. The third Quinceanera dress will be given away through a mobile contest and the winner will be announced on October 4 on Quinceanera.com.

Also featured will be the winner of Quinceanera.com’s “cover girl” contest, Alexus Barrantes, who will open the fashion show and receive a $650 scholarship, courtesy of the Patricia Sturla Academy of Acting and Modeling.

There’s nothing happy about birthdays.

I have four kids.

When my brother died five years ago, his son came to live with me. His birthday is in August.

Three of my own kids have birthdays in September. One in October. Which has always left me broke by November. Just in time for Christmas shopping.

Meaning I start every January hip-deep in credit card bills, which I only end up paying off by my birthday in April. Just in time for April 15, income tax day, which is when I send a birthday gift to my Uncle Sam.

All of this has been cause for deep reflection. Obviously, I was enjoying myself a little too much around the holidays when I was a younger swordsman and nine months later, I started picking up life-long tabs for my brief indulgences.

But I’ve paid enough. Most parents pay way too much for their kids’ birthdays.

Start with the ludicrous cost of a kid’s birthday party today.

I don’t know how or when it started, but somewhere along the American road simple birthday parties with an ice cream cake, pointy hats, chips and Pin the Tail on the Donkey have evolved into mini-coronations for spoiled brats.

“Oh, junior has a real biggie coming up this year,” I heard one modern mother say. “He’s gonna be FIVE.”

Okay, I understand the milestone of the Big 5-0.

But when did the Big 0-5 become an Earth-shifting number? For the Big 0-5, parents with too much disposable income pay the equivalent of a month’s rent for a “theme” party with clowns, magicians, petting zoos, merry-go-rounds and professional party planners.

I hate to sound like an old crank, but when I was a kid, six other kids showed up with $2 toys to eat an Ebinger’s cake and sing “Happy Birthday.” Price tag: $20. Today, kids have $1,000 parties in indoor playgrounds where it’s $10 extra per kid if your son’s entire fourth-grade class uses the laser tag room. I’ve been to birthday parties in Adventureland, bowling alleys, indoor swimming pools in winter, batting cages, outdoor swimming pools and movie theaters.

Some of these were for my own kid, all over Queens.

I’ll never forget a Sweet 16 a friend threw for his daughter at the Waldorf-Astoria that cost him more than the down payment on my house.

I attended a bat mitzvah that had open bars, a half-dozen international food stations, a raw bar and a teen malt shop.

I ate until I needed a personal trainer. Then a waiter shouted, “Please be seated for dinner.” And two big doors opened into a massive dining room where a four-course meal was presented with a deejay, a This-Is-Your-Life slide show, and speeches by family, friends and a rabbi.

“This not only cost more than my wedding,” whispered one partygoer. “It cost more than my divorce.”

All for a kid who just turned a whopping 12.

Okay, let’s hit the brakes, grownups.

Birthdays are killing us. The country reels from the second-worst economic collapse in history. Countless millions are unemployed. Foreclosures are rampant. And we’re spending ourselves bankrupt to sing “Happy Birthday” to little ingrates who choose only to remember those times when you say, “No!”

Wanna see this crap stop?

Turn the tables. How about on the date of his or her Earth-shattering birth, a kid of 7 and older has to celebrate the parents who brought him or her into the world instead of the other way around? On their birthdays, kids should shower parents with gifts for giving them the gift of life. If kids don’t have money, then they should clean the dishes, take out the garbage, do the laundry, mow the lawn, shovel the snow and clean their own rooms.

At 14, when they’re old enough for working papers, kids should start buying gifts for their parents.

You, Little Miss Shopaholic, with the skin-tight $200 jeans, break open the piggy bank and go buy mom a dozen white tulips to say thanks for losing her figure giving birth to you 15 years ago today. Then cook her some dinner. And do the dishes. And put the ottoman under her tired feet.

You, Mister Cool Jock, for your 16th birthday, go out and Simonize the old man’s car. Especially if you ever expect him to lend you the keys or co-sign for wheels of your own.

Mother’s Day and Father’s Day aren’t enough. That leaves 363 Kids’ Days a year. If a family has four kids, there should be four more Mother’s and Father’s Days a year, when kids give back to their parents, who pick up the tab for them every day.

The season of You’re Wearing That?!? has gone by so fast! There’s only 3 episodes left. Here’s what’s happening on tonight’s episode:

Alana’s a vivacious 15-year-old high school sophomore in South Pasadena, CA, who thinks she’s got it going on when it comes to style. But her mother Desiree thinks she tries to incorporate too many styles and trends at one time, and wears outfits that are too old for her age and not form-fitting.

For her part, Alana thinks mom’s idea of an outfit is “B-O-R-I-N-G!”

A 45-year-old working mom of three, Desiree admits to being too busy to worry about fashion, but Alana is sick and tired of her mom’s boring, monochromatic and outdated clothes

With Alana’s “Sweet 16” birthday bash around the corner, Desiree and Alana desperately need help, and Luciene is just the gal to fix these ladies up!

Stylist Luciene Salomone knows she has a tall order in helping Desiree and Alana out of their fashion funk. Each woman must find some great new outfits for the other, including one extra-special outfit for Alana’s “Sweet 16″ birthday bash, where they will reveal their new looks.

Teen posts birthday party invite on Facebook and 21,000 RSVP

Let’s hope Rebecca Javeleau’s sweet 16 will be much less dramatic than her 15th birthday party.

Most teens planning a birthday party dread the no-shows, but 14-year-old Javeleau probably prays most of her RSVP’s are no-shows, since 21,000 responded to the English teen’s invitation, which she mistakenly posted to the entire Facebook community, as reported by the Daily Telegraph.

Suffice to say, the party is over before it ever began.

Her mother (or should I say mum, since they are British?), Tracey Livesey, 40, of Harpenden, England, (in Hertfordshire county) has now stripped away her daughter’s computer and Internet privileges. She’s also had her daughter’s mobile phone SIM card changed. She told the Telegraph:

Her party is cancelled and she will be lucky to get a birthday card from me after this. I said she could have 15 friends along to the party but my sister-in-law said that 8,000 people had said on Facebook that they were coming.

Livesey’s daughter did not realize she was creating a public event, her mother said. Now her Facebook account is locked down, thanks to engaging those privacy settings, but not before 21,000 Facebook users had clicked the RSVP button in the affirmative. While it’s a good chance most of the accounts were fake, they did boast some A-list names, including Justin Bieber, Stephen Hawking, Stevie Wonder, Susan Boyle and Rick Astley, according to the Telegraph.

If even a fraction of those guests decided to crash the now non-existent party, this quiet, small town in the southeastern part of England (population 30,000), it would cause quite a commotion.

Local law enforcement is on alert and on extra patrols as they look out for would-be revelers on Oct.7, when the party would have taken place. They are concerned because even after the birthday posting was taken off, other events were created: pre-party, after-party, clear-up party and “hang-over” party, with some using the teen’s photograph.

CBS reported the creation of one group called “I Was Part Of The 7.10.10 FB takeover of Rebecca Javeleau’s Flat Party,” that had 261 followers.

“The party was to be held in a block of flats that wouldn’t accommodate more than 10 people, let alone 10,000,” Sgt. Lewis Ducket of the Hertfordshire Police Department, told CBS.

Police probably feared a repeat, on a grander scale, of what had happened in another English town in February, when 50 people crashed another teen girl’s party and engaged in some old-school crazy-rocker debauchery with smashed furniture, bubble bath poured on the TV, ornamental Samurai swords taken down and impaled into walls and vomit and urine all over the house, including in the bed of the teen’s younger sibling.

This type of thing seems to happen more often than you’d think, with one mansion in Spain robbed of items adding up to $12,000 in 2008. More than 400 people crashed that sweet 16, which I’m betting wasn’t so sweet after all was said and done.

And in 2008, The Times (of London) ran a story about the Facebook Republican Army, which professed to target teen parties, but which ended up being a hoax.

Livesey’s mom has a bone to pick with Facebook, which she said should have taken more responsibility.

They should make it obvious that an event that is created is not just going out to your friends but everyone else on the site. When this happened Facebook should have realised that thousands of people going to a 14-year-old’s party is not right and shut the group down automatically.

Facebook responded to the Daily Telegraph:

When someone creates an event on Facebook it clearly says ‘anyone can view and rsvp (public event)’. If you leave this checked then it is a public event so anyone can view the content and respond. If users do see content on Facebook that they feel is inappropriate or unsuitable We have clear reporting links on every page, including event pages, for users to flag it. We also provide people with the tools to manage their own content so with events for example, there are clear tools to allow you to control who can see and respond to the event.

Facebook also emphasize the value of educating children about the Internet and using Facebook responsibly.

16 Wishes Grants a Fun, Romantic Tween Comedy

Here’s what I like about Disney Channel Original Movies: they are fun, free of offensive content, age appropriate and uplifting. In a day and age when media is what it is, those qualities are appreciated. So while Disney Channel movies may be a little cheesy and most won’t win any awards for artistic merit, they have an important place.

16 wishes follows in that tradition with a quirky story about a girl whose sweet 16 birthday starts out all wrong, but her luck changes when a random woman offers her a box full of magical candles that have the power to make all of her birthday wishes come true. A new take on the old adage, “Be careful what you wish for,” 16 Wishes conveys positive messages about friendship and values, and it reminds kids that there’s no need to grow up too fast — really. The movie is aimed at young girls and tweens (about ages 8-14) and is rated TV-G. The movie premiered on Disney Channel last night and will encore this evening, tomorrow, and throughout the month (check your Disney Channel listings).
